Illescas on Canal Rural: warns about political obstacles and structural challenges that condition the European Union–Mercosur agreement

First block: Doubts in Europe delay the ratification of the EU-Mercosur agreement

In a conversation with journalist Carlos Etchepare, international trade analyst Nelson Illescas, director of communications and content for the Southern Cone Producers Group, warned that the agreement between the European Union and Mercosur faces further delays after the European Parliament requested a judicial review of the treaty's legality. He explained that this review could postpone its ratification by between one and a half and three years.

Illescas maintained that, despite the fears of the European agricultural sector, the agreement includes safeguards to prevent trade imbalances. Furthermore, he indicated that the European Commission is considering a partial implementation of the trade chapter to prevent the treaty from stalling, in a geopolitical context that is driving Europe to strengthen its strategic alliances.

Second block: Political tensions and institutional weaknesses complicate the implementation of the agreement

During the second part of the interview with Carlos Etchepare, Nelson Illescas analyzed the political tensions surrounding the signing of the agreement, including the absence of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. According to the expert, this was a missed political opportunity, considering that the treaty represents Mercosur's most significant trade advancement since its inception.

Illescas also warned that the agreement faces internal resistance within the European Union, especially in the agricultural sector, and noted that there is misinformation about Mercosur's production standards. At the same time, he emphasized that the South American bloc faces structural limitations, such as a lack of regulatory harmonization and the institutional weakness of its regional bodies.

Third segment: Illescas warns about the future of Mercosur and its role in global trade

In the last block with Carlos Etchepare, Illescas argued that Mercosur had failed to fully achieve its integration goals due to repeated shifts in its political and trade orientation. He explained that this situation led some member countries to explore individual agreements outside the bloc.
