Sustainable livestock farming in the Southern Cone: Martín Fraguío highlighted opportunities and challenges at the Baku COP

On Saturday, November 16, Martín Fraguío, from GPS Argentina, participated in a panel on sustainable livestock farming in the Southern Cone organized by the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA). The event took place in the institution's pavilion during the United Nations Climate Change Conference, held in Baku.

The discussion brought together representatives of the private sector and explored the role of pastoral systems in carbon sequestration and climate change mitigation, highlighting the opportunities offered by production techniques in the livestock sector.

Among the main challenges highlighted was the need to develop accurate systems to measure carbon emissions and sequestration, a process considerably more complex in agriculture than in the fossil fuel industry. Likewise, strategies were discussed so that producers who implement sustainable practices can monetize the ecosystem services they generate, as a way to encourage the adoption of these techniques in a context of increasingly tight incomes for the sector.

The discussion underscored the importance of balancing environmental sustainability with the economic viability of producers, a key challenge in the global fight against climate change.
