In 2025, Argentina exported $32.8 billion in agri-food products at an average value of US$397 per ton, the lowest value among eight major exporters analyzed.<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The dollar value generated by each exported ton is one of the most direct indicators of a country's standing in international markets. A low unit value can have two distinct origins: the composition of the export basket\u2014which products are exported\u2014or the ability to obtain better prices for the same product, linked to quality, differentiation, certification, and market access conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The analysis of the unit value of Argentine agri-food exports in 2025, prepared using UN Comtrade data for eight major exporters, allows us to identify these effects. In the Argentine case, both problems coexist, but their impact varies depending on the competitor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lowest unit value in the group<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Last year, Argentina exported agri-food products at an average unit value of US$397\/ton. Brazil earned US$597, 34% more. Australia earned US$792, practically double. Canada earned US$849. And New Zealand earned US$4,205\/ton, more than ten times the Argentine value.<\/p>\n\n\n

Compared to countries like New Zealand, Chile (US$2,960\/ton), or Malaysia (US$1,302\/ton), the explanation is relatively straightforward: their export baskets have a structural similarity to Argentina's of only 0.01 to 0.04 out of a maximum of 1. They export fundamentally different products\u2014premium dairy, salmon, out-of-season fruits, palm oil\u2014with higher intrinsic value. The gap is largely a compositional effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the case of the United States breaks that logic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Very cheap, different price: comparison with the EE.UU.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The following graph shows the most important point of the analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most striking case is from the United States: with a cane almost identical to Argentina (similitude index 0.92 out of 1) the average value gap with our country is 333 US$\/ton. This anomaly is the hallmark key.<\/p>\n\n\n

The agro-food exporting basket from the USA and Argentina includes the same products in very similar proportions: corn, soybeans, wheat, oilseed by-products, beef. However, the USA obtains 730 dollars per ton and Argentina 397. The difference is in the price that each country manages to obtain for the same products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Product by product: where Ghana is and where Argentina leaves<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The comparison by departure between Argentina and the USA confirms the boss:<\/p>\n\n\n

In 6 of the 8 products presented, the USA surpasses Argentina. The gaps range from +5% in soybean pores to +141% in crustaceans. For larger volume grains - corn, wheat, soybeans - the gap is between 5% and 12%, which may seem modest but is amplified by the enormous tonnage involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A notable exception: in fresh beef, Argentina obtains the highest unit value of the group (11,049 US$\/ton), surpassing the EE.U.U. by a minimum margin (+1%) but also largely Brazil (+78%) and Canada (+30%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Without a doubt, the Argentine price is practically the same as the American price. This indicates that the capacity for differentiation exists in the Argentine cane, but is concentrated in items that represent only 6% of the total FOB.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brazil: intermediate boss with own reading<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Brazil (cane similarity 0.63) constitutes an intermediate case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In larger volume grains, Brazilian prices are practically identical to Argentine ones: corn +0%, wheat +0%. In these products, both countries operate as commodity producers with very limited or zero price fixing capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The gap with Brazil appears in more elaborate products: frozen beef (+22%), soy cakes (+10%), crustaceans (+225%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since both countries are members of Mercosur, the differences cannot be attributed to better access to markets as conditions are similar for both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The analysis shows that the added value in processing stages generates price differences that the market recognizes and that Argentina does not capture in the same measure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fresh beef, however, Argentina vastly surpasses Brazil (+78%) showing that differentiation is possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What the analysis shows and what remains open<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The low Argentine unit value is not a uniform problem or a single cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The composition of the cane is the main explanatory factor of the gap compared to countries with a very high value per ton (Nueva Zelanda, Chile, Malaysia). Diversifying into products with higher unitary value implies a long-term effort in production, infrastructure and access to markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In relation to countries with similar baskets, there are rubles where Argentina operates without price power (grains as commodities) and rubles where it obtains competitive prices or leaders, such as fresh beef, where it registers the highest unitary value of the group, or man\u00ed without roasting, where it equals the USA and vastly surpasses Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The gap in relation to countries with a similar network -especially the USA- points to price factors that could be approachable in shorter areas than those that require changing the structure of the network: differentiation, certification, bringability and conditions of access to markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In terms of large volume, however, price equality with Brazil suggests that the price improvement margin is limited in the shortest period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The policy in these areas should be oriented towards adding value in later stages -milling, processing, proteins- before the differentiation of the grain itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
