During the 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 29), held in Baku, Azerbaijan, Roberto Azevedo, former Director-General of the WTO, currently a consultant to the Brazilian Agribusiness Association (ABAG) and a member of the GPS network, participated in a session organized by the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA).<\/p>\n\n\n

In his speech, Azevedo stressed that solutions to climate change must be global to be effective and that they must be leveraged on regulations and incentives, among which the creation of a global carbon market is central. He also referred to the role of agriculture as part of the solution to climate change in relation to the sector's capacity to capture carbon, contributing to a better transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The panel also included Rattan Lal, considered the world's leading authority on soil sciences; Jos\u00e9 Abelardo Mai, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security of Belize; Luis Pocasangre, Director General of CATIE; Alejandro Mart\u00ednez, Director of Water-Smart Agriculture of the Catholic Relief Services agency; Clifford Mart\u00ednez, Water Management Coordinator, Ministry of Agriculture of Belize and Manuel Otero, Director General of IICA. The panel was moderated by Muhammad Ibrahim, IICA's Director of Technical Cooperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

COP 29, which will be held from November 11 to 22, is the largest environmental forum in the world and serves for countries to discuss and negotiate their commitments for the transformation of their modes of production and consumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
